More Regular Testing Of Vehicles On The Cards

The National Department of Transport has just published GG 35413 for comments, which seeks to amend Regulation 138 of the National Road Traffic Act. It is proposed that vehicles older than 10 years be tested every 2 years as from 1 December 2012.

At present, vehicles are only tested on change of ownership, and trucks and taxis are tested annually. As from 1 November 2010, buses are tested every 6 months. This Periodic Vehicle Testing will ensure that vehicles which currently do not need to be tested, will need to be submitted for a roadworthiness test, repaired (if necessary) and re-tested before its annual licence can be renewed.
